Mustang 1965 to 1973 Transmission Workshop Manual - All 3 & 4 Speed Manual Transmissions Plus the C4 & C6 Automatic
Author: Floyd Clymer
ISBN: 9781588503039
VP Book ID: 20190
Pages: 145
Dimensions: 8.25" x 10.75"
Description: 145 pages and profusely illustrated with more than 280 illustrations diagrams and charts, size 8.250 x 10.750 inches. The decision to publish this manual was based on the fact that the predominance of contemporary aftermarket workshop manuals for the first generation Mustang (1964 1/2 to 1973) do not include transmission overhaul procedure, they only cover basic maintenance and adjustment. This omission is likely due to the fact that there were seven different transmissions available, including the 2.77 and 3.03 three-speed, the 4-speed Dagenham, Borg Warner and Ford Design (toploader) and the optional C4 and C6 automatic. This manual includes detailed overhaul, maintenance, adjustment and service data for each of those 7 transmissions, making it the most comprehensive manual ever published for the first generation Mustang transmissions.
IMPORTANT: The reader should be advised that the contents of this manual are based on data that was published in the factory workshop manuals; consequently, it will offer no additional information to owners of the original factory manuals. However, any owner of a contemporary aftermarket manual that requires comprehensive transmission maintenance, adjustment and overhaul data will find this publication to be indispensible.
While the intent of this manual was to assist first generation Mustang owners, these transmissions were also used in many different Ford automobiles. While that additional information could have been deleted from this publication, it has been retained as many of the earlier Mustangs, once they became 'just used cars', were retrofitted with used parts from other Ford models resulting in 'unicorns' that were never available from the factory. For that reason, the data that applies to the Comet, Falcon and Fairlane models, including the overdrive transmission was retained.
Due to the variety of different transmissions offered, there is a certain amount of confusion regarding what unit was fitted to which model of Mustang. This confusion is made even worse as this was the era when the buyer went to the dealer and filled out a list of options they wanted on their new automobile and, in some cases, the dealer would retrofit an option that was not available from the factory in order to make the sale. However, based on our research of the factory press kits, here is what we believe were the engine/transmission combinations available from the factory: The 3 and 4 speed manual and the C4 auto were available in the 170 & 200 C.I.D. 6 cylinder models. The 3 speed manual and C4 auto were the only two options for the 260 C.I.D. V8. The 4 speed manual and C4 auto were available in the 289 C.I.D. V8 models - with the exception of the 289 HI-PO which only came with a 4 speed. The C4 was also an option for the 302 C.I.D. cars. The C6 was optional for the 'big block' 390, 427 and 428 C.I.D. and the later 351 C.I.D. Mustangs.
Some of the special tools referenced in the text may be identified by the appropriate Ford part number. However, they may also be substituted by equivalent tools available from many of the reputable aftermarket tool suppliers.
We encourage you to exercise caution when purchasing technical publications for your classic Ford automobile as many of the reprints found on internet websites at enticingly low prices are nothing more than poor quality photocopies that are scanned and printed complete with greasy pages and thumbprints and, as such, are deceptively described as pre-owned, used or even refurbished. However, VelocePress.com has been publishing reprints of motorcycle and automobile manuals since 2003 and our publications have earned excellent reviews worldwide so you can be assured you are purchasing a quality product...29.95 USD
