Originally published by Floyd Clymer in 1969 with coverage for the 1969 and earlier 125cc, 175cc, 250cc and 360cc models, this 2025 edition includes all of the information from the original publication. However, it has been expanded to include data for the 1970 and later machines some of which remained in production through the 1980's (see below).

Montesa motorcycles were equipped with 4, 5 and 6-speed transmissions. While this manual only includes overhaul and service data for the 5 and 6-speed models, reference to that data should help eliminate any difficulty in servicing the 4-speed transmissions.

The reason this manual has an end date of 1978 is due to the fact that from 1978 onwards production of the various Montesa models becomes somewhat blurred. In the early 1980's Spain suffered a round of economic unrest and strikes. In addition, a shrinking sales market that unfortunately coincided with the purchase of expensive modern equipment and machinery created a financial downturn that necessitated a reduction in the Montesa workforce and the need for a major influx of capital in order to continue to survive. There were a number of workplace strikes, including one that shut down the factory for three months, and the deteriorating financial situation resulted in the suspension of any new model development. The situation continued to worsen and Montesa was only able to avoid closing the factory doors by entering into an agreement with Honda Motor in 1982. This basically brought the production of the 'original' Montesa models to a conclusion and a new corporation, 'Montesa Honda S.A.' was created.
